U.S. Forest Service future?

A study has been requested by a Congressman from the State of Washington to determine the future of the U.S. Forest Service.

The Forest Service is over 100 years old and has always been a part of the Department of Agriculture. When it was first formed, it was mostly a commodity-based agency. That is no longer the case.

The requested study will seek to answer the question of where they best fit – is it now the Department of Interior? This is not the first time the question has been raised or a Government Accounting Office(GAO) study has been requested for the Forest Service.

This study will take some time to complete…and at the same time the Forest Service continues to move forward on their restructuring.

Good News: Legislation to guarantee $500 million per year for emergency fire fighting has a reasonable chance of enactment. This bill moved out of the House Natural Resource Committee. We’ll keep you posted on the status.
